The 1st National Steel Meeting gathered around 600 people on June 2-3, at Hotel Sofitel Rio. During the opening ceremony, following the speech made by the President of IBS, Rinaldo Campos Soares (2007-2008), the Secretary for Economic Development, Energy, Industry and Services, Júlio Bueno, representing Governor Sergio Cabral, made a presentation about the development of Rio de Janeiro's industrial pole. After that, the Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, Ivan Ramalho, spoke about the importance of the steel industry for the growth of Brazil's exports.

On June 3, the subjects addressed were the challenges faced by the steel industry in domestic and in international scenarios, sustainable development and perspectives of consuming sectors. Presented by journalist Miriam Leitão, the two morning panels comprised debates over the "Expansion of the Brazilian Steel Industry - Domestic and International Impacts", with the participation of executives from within the steel-metallurgic chain. In the afternoon, representatives of the steel consuming sectors presented their growth perspectives.
