
Votorantim Metais –
Steel Business Unit has significant share
in the market, ranking among the country’s
three largest producers of long steel for civil
construction and the industry. Its production
plant, located in Barra Mansa, in the sate of
Rio de Janeiro, started operating in 1937 at an
initial capacity of 3.6 thousand tonnes/year of
pig iron.
Over the following years, the
company made investments in quality and production,
increasing this capacity to 250 thousand tonnes/year
by 1970.
The Steel Business Unit of Votorantim
Metais has always sought to anticipate the market
through innovation. Following a sustainable development
model, it came to use, as from 1995, recycled
steel as its main raw material – a process
that contributes for the preservation of natural
resources.
In 2002, the company finished
the modernization process of its wire and bars
laminator, equipment responsible for more than
75% of the plant’s productive capacity,
which is currently of 450 thousand tonnes/year
of finished products.
In 2003, the company built a
new continuous teeming line, thus taking an important
step in its modernization process. In the following
year, Votorantim Metais announced investments
of US$ 200 million to increase its production
to 850 thousand tonnes/year by 2007.
