The Belgo Conglomerate
is one of Brazil’s largest private groups
and has distinguished performance in the sectors
of Steel and Drawing Plants. It produces long
steel under the form of laminated and drawn products.
Its installed capacity is of 5.1 million tonnes/year
of laminated and 1.48 million tonnes/year of drawn
products. It is the leader in commercial and industrial
wire, The Belgo companies have nearly 10,000 employees
in Brazil and Argentina, distributed among 12
organizations, besides domestic institutions and
the Belgo Foundation, responsible for the group’s
social actions. Since its foundation, in 1921,
Belgo has been part of the Arbed Group (Luxembourg)
and, in 2002, joined one of the largest steel
groups in the world, Arcelor, result of the union
of Arbed, Usinor (France) and Aceralia (Spain).
In 2004, Arcelor produced 47
million tonnes of steel and accrued revenues of
30 billion euros, employing around 95,000 people
in over 60 countries. Other shareholders of Belgo
are the pension funds Previ and Centrus and Bradesco.
The activities in the Steel
Sector are conducted by Belgo Siderurgia, which
has industrial units in João Monlevade,
Juiz de Fora, Sabará and Itaúna,
in Minas Gerais; in Piracicaba – SP and
in Vitória -ES. In Argentina, it controls
Acindar - Industria Argentina de Aceros S.A.,
the largest producer of long steel in that country.
In this segment, they produce wire, rods, bars,
shapes and wire for civil construction.
In the Drawing Plants Sector,
the main company is Belgo Bekaert Arames Ltda.(BBA),
with units in Contagem and Sabará;MG, Osasco
and Hortolândia-SP, which produce wire and
other products. The other companies in this segment
are: Belgo Bekaert Nordeste S.A., in Feira de
Santana-BA; BMB; Belgo-Mineira Bekaert Artefatos
de Arame Ltda., in Vespasiano and Itaúna-MG,
producer of steel-cord for tires and hose wire
(used for high pressure hoses) and BBA’s
affiliate, Wire Rope Industries (WRI) Group, producer
of cables, with factories in Canada, Peru, Chile
and Brazil (Osasco-SP). It is also active in forestry
and coal-producing, electric energy generation
and services.
