The Companhia Siderúrgica
Nacional was founded on April 9, 1941 and
started its operations on October 1, 1946. As the
first integrated producer of flat steel in Brazil,
the CSN is a milestone in the Brazilian industrialization
process. Its steel allowed the implementation of the
first national industries. Privatized after more than
six decades of activity in 1993, it is still making
history.
A public company, with stocks traded
in the São Paulo and New York (NYSE) markets,
CSN is one of the biggest and most competitive industrial
complexes in Latin America. With an annual output
capacity of 5.8 million tonnes and around 8,000 employees,
CSN focuses its activities on steel, mining and infrastructure.
It offers one of the most complete range of flat steel
of the region, with high added value.
The strategy integrated and aligned
with the core business ensures the company’s
leading position in the Brazilian steel sector. The
acquisition of Heartland Steel, constituting CSN LLC,
in the US, in 2001, marks the beginning of CSN’s
internationalization process. Currently, the company
has one integrated steel mill, five industrial units
(two of them abroad, in the US and Portugal), iron
ore, limestone and dolomite and tin mines, a strong
distributor of flat steel, harbor terminals, participations
in railways and in two hidroelectric plants. With
a firm and innovative management, the company believes
in the enterpreneurial strength of Brazilian capital
and in the country’s huge potential to compete
in the steel market.
CSN steel is present in several
segments, among which we may mention automotive, civil
construction, packagings, White goods and OEM, supplied
to clients in Brazil and overseas.
